The Azores anticyclone weather pattern is responsible for the extraordinary climate of Madeira throughout the year. The island has many microclimates due to its orography. Because of the privileged geographical location and east to west orientation the island can be said to be divided into two weather regions, the south being warm subtropical and the north being wet temperate. The two combine to produce an exceptionally mild climate, with an overall average temperature of 22°C in the summer and 16°C in the winter, along with a moderate level of humidity. Rain falls on an average of 120 days per year with 10mm or more being recorded on 20 of those days. The sea water temperature is also reasonably mild due to the influence of the warm Gulf stream with average summer temperatures of 22°C and an average winter temperature of 17°C.
